CTRA Writtle Field

Introduction

In Archery tournaments, and often during practice, we shoot what we refer to as a 'Round'. Rounds can be broken down into Imperial or Metric and Indoor or Outdoor rounds. Outdoor Imperial rounds are based on shooting a distance measured in yards on a 122cm face and scored on what is known as a 5-zone scoring system. Outdoor Metric rounds are based on shooting a distance measured in metres on either a 122cm or 80cm face and scored on a 10-zone scoring system. Indoor Metric and Imperial rounds are a little more complex with 60cm, 40cm, 16in and sometimes a variety of 3-spot faces and generally a 10-zone scoring system. These are broken down below.

Scoring Systems

'Standard' Faces

The most commonly used target face is a series of concentric circles coloured (from inner most to outer most) Gold, Red, Blue, Black and White. Each of the circles is divided into an inner and outer circle. When using 5-zone scoring the zones are based on the coloured circles alone and are scored from inside to outside as 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1. When using 10-zone scoring the zones are based on all of the circles and are scored from 10 down to 1.

However there is an additional smaller circle inside the Gold. From the inside to the outside this actually gives 11 scoring zones. This innermost circle is an 'X' and still scores 10 and (when shooting outdoors) will be marked down on the scoresheet as an X and can be used as a tiebreaker if needed.

Worcester Face

The Worcester face is almost identical in size to a Standard 40cm face but only has 5 concentric circles. The innermost is White and the rest are Black. Worcester rounds use a 5-zone scoring system but in this case scoring is 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 from inside to outside.

Spot Faces

There are a number of faces known as 'spot' faces. These are used indoors where the short distance means there's a greater chance of an arrow hitting the target catching an arrow that has already been shot. Most commonly seen are vertical 3-spot and vegas 3-spot faces. These are equivalent to a 40cm standard face apart from the fact they only have the innermost 5 zones and are scored from 10 down to 6. A shot that would have been a 5 or lower on a standard face will be a miss on one of these spot faces. Additionally there is an equivalent spot face for Worcester rounds, it also only has the inner half of the standard face but as the Worcester round has 5 arrows per end there are 5 spots.

Outdoor Rounds

Imperial

Outdoor Imperial Rounds are all shot on a 122cm target face and are scored using a 5-zone system (9, 7, 5, 3, 1).
